Andrew Sachs has revealed that John Cleese once floored him on the Fawlty Towers set – with a frying pan.
In an interview with Closer magazine, the Manuel actor said: “I love him dearly, but in one episode Basil whacks Manuel on the head with a frying pan.
“John was meant to use a padded pan, but he picked up the wrong one and I was floored!
“I went up to him in the bar afterwards and said: ‘I must protest – You hit me very hard and it’s just not on!'”
Andrew continued: “And he replied: ‘What’s the matter with you? This is a once-in-a-lifetime show, now pull yourself together and have a Babycham!'”
Fawlty Towers is to return to our screens on May 10 and 17 for two special shows, to be aired at 9pm on digital channel G.O.L.D.
Andrew found himself at the centre of a major scandal last autumn when it emerged that BBC presenters Jonathan Ross and Russell had left lewd messages on the actor’s answering machine while recording Russell’s Radio 2 show.
The two presenters said that Russell had slept with Sachs’ granddaughter, Georgina Baillie, 23, and joked that Sachs might kill himself.
The ensuing public outcry saw 33-year-old Russell quit the station and Jonathan suspended from the airwaves for 12 weeks without pay.
