Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth – and win the girl!

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Edgar Wright’s action comedy based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novel

Deliriously proving that the geek shall inherit the earth, Edgar Wright’s fabulous Scott Pilgrim vs. The World sees cinema’s über-nerd Michael Cera taking on all comers in the quest for the girl of his dreams – and coming out on top.

Cera’s the titular Scott Pilgrim, of course, the drippy 22-year-old bass guitarist for Toronto garage band Sex Bob-omb. He’s so drippy, in fact, that since getting dumped by his rock star ex-gf, Envy Adams, the closest he has come to getting a girlfriend is his totally chaste relationship with an adoring high-school student called Knives Chau – much to the derision of his elder sister (played by Up in the Air’s Anna Kendrick) and his louche gay flatmate (a scene-stealing Kieran Culkin).

Then he meets way-cool Amazon delivery girl Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and is instantly smitten. But before he can win her heart, he must defeat her “seven evil exes” in a series of cartoony duels that play out like the escalating levels in an arcade video game.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Michael Cera’s titular hero must defeat his beloved’s seven evil exes in video-game style combat in Edgar Wright’s action comedy

Based on Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley’s cult graphic novel, Wright’s movie is steeped in the hyper-stylised look, mood and sound not just of video games, but of comic books, manga and indie bands too.

This is the world of its hero’s imagination, and of its fans – but you don’t have to be a geeky fanboy to enjoy the movie’s teeming wit and inventiveness.

Indeed, the movie deserves to reach out beyond its core demographic – which hasn’t necessarily been the case with other comic-book adaptations to come our way recently. Sweet and joyful at heart, Scott Pilgrim kicks Kick-Ass’s ass.

To get all the puns, in-jokes, whip-smart sight gags and pop culture references, you’ll probably need to watch the movie again and again – which should suit the geeks just fine.

On general release.
