American top seed Serena Williams has won 6-4 6-4 against Spain’s 20th seed Garbine Muguruza to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title.

Serena becomes a Wimbledon champion for the sixth time and it’s her
21st Grand Slam title, which is one less than Stefi Graf and two less than Martina Navratilova.

Serena rose to applaud her runner-up as she went to collect her shield. And it was clear that the 21-year-old was struggling to hold back the tears.

Garbine – whose fans in court called out “Gabby” in support – said: ”I have enjoyed it a lot. I am very proud and happy to be here playing in front of this amazing crowd. To play in a Grand Slam final is a dream come true and I want to praise Serena. She has shown why she is world No.1.”

A few moments later, before collecting her trophy, Serena said: ” I cannot believe I am standing here. Garbine played so well and I didn’t think it was over. She shouldn’t be sad and will be holding this trophy one day.

“It has been an honour and pleasure to give so many years to this unbelievable stadium. I never dreamt I would still be out here and winning things so every day is a pleasure.”
