Sherlock is set to make a Christmas Day appearance for a special mini episode available on the BBC’s Red Button.
The episode, Many Happy Returns, will be available to view between December 25 and New Year’s Day, and will serve as a prequel to the third series.
Series three of Sherlock begins on New Year’s Day with the first episode, The Empty Hearse, providing fans with answers to how Sherlock, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, managed to fake his own death.
The mini episode will be a bridge between the last episode of series two, where Sherlock appeared to fall to his death with John Watson (Martin Freeman) believing he was gone, and the new series where he reappears.
A synopsis for the episode reads: “Sherlock Holmes has been gone for two years. But someone isn’t quite convinced that he’s dead…”
Casting for the mini episode has not yet been announced.
