Sir Trevor McDonald is planning to step down as presenter of News At Ten at the end of the year, according to The Mirror.

The 68-year-old was lured out of retirement to front the ITV1 news programme when it returned to screens – but the paper reports he will be leaving after the US presidential elections on 4 November.

“Sir Trevor is still enjoying presenting the news but he has done what he set out to do,” a source said.

“He has relaunched News At Ten and ratings have got better recently. So he feels it could be a good time to hand over the reins to Mark Austin.”

“He is not getting any younger and has lots of things he wants to do outside of News At Ten.”

Recently, Sir Trevor has also presented the satirical late-night show News Knight as well as fronting The National TV Awards.
