Starred Up | Film review – O’Connell & Mendelsohn punch above their weight in hard-hitting prison drama

‘Starred Up’ to an adult prison because of his violent behaviour in a borstal, young offender Eric (Jack O’Connell) finds himself on the same wing as his estranged convict father (Ben Mendelsohn) in this hard-hitting drama. Screenwriter Jonathan Asser’s experience of working as a psychotherapist with violent inmates in Wandsworth prison gives the film a grim authenticity. It’s often incredibly tense and sometimes difficult to watch, but the acting is terrific.
