Matt Di Angelo had a disastrous night on Strictly Come Dancing – his two performances were described by the judges as ‘letting it fall apart’.

His first, a foxtrot, earned him and partner Flavia Cacace just 26 out of 40 and Craig Revel Horwood said: “You’re letting your nerves take hold of you. I know you’ve got all of this, but you’re letting it fall apart.”

Their samba later was little better and judge Len Goodman said ‘nerves were getting the better of you’. This dance earned the duo 29 points.

It proved to be Gethin Jones’ night, as he continues to blossom as a dancer. His American smooth with partner Camilla prompted Len to say ‘they were in next week’s semi-final’. It scored 38, while their jive later scored 37.

Once again, Alesha Dixon excelled in the judges’ eyes. Her Viennese waltz earned her and partner Matt 38 and her second dance, a paso doble, scored 36. Len said: “If I had to criticise it, you didn’t have that haughty posture you should have for the paso doble.”

There was another strong performance by Letitia Dean. She and Darren Bennett performed a wonderful Viennese waltz which scored 35 points. Arlene said: “You danced like a star.”

Unfortunately, her jive later didn’t reach the same standard and she scored a modest 30. Still, her total was 10 more than Matt’s. Enough to edge her way into the semi-final?
