Jo Wood has become the latest casualty of Strictly Come Dancing 2009, after losing out in her first attempt at the dreaded dance-off.

Despite having received low marks from the judges throughout her time on the series, Wood and professional partner Brendan Cole had won through on public vote.

This week however their luck ran out after they found themselves in the bottom two with athlete Jade Johnson and her partner Ian Waite.

And after giving the latter some rave reviews earlier in the show for her samba, the panel voted unanimously to save Jade.

Afterwards Wood joked about her departure. “I’m surprised to have lasted this long,” she said, “it’s a miracle.”

And she could not praise Cole highly enough. “He’s been wonderful,” she added, “and I’ve enjoyed every single minute.”

Earlier in the show, Wood had received a rough ride from the judges for her samba. Alesha Dixon described it as “a mess” while Craig Revel Horwood called it “futile and ineffectual….a dance disaster”.

In the end she received just 14 points from the judges – the lowest score of the series so far.

Jade Johnson, on the other hand, found herself at the other end of the scoreboard after kicking off the show with a lively samba.

“You got to grips with it marvellously well,” Len Goodman said, while Bruno Tonioli described her as “fierce”.

There was also high praise for Ricky Whittle, Zoe Lucker and Ali Bastian – who became the second celebrity of the series to receive a 10 from the judges, this time coming from Bruno Tonioli for her American Smooth

The actress eventually scored 37 out of 40 for her routine – the highest score of the series to date.
