According to overnight estimates the Hollywood-themed edition of the BBC One show pulled in an average audience of 9.9m – the same as it had last Saturday – compared to 8.6m for X Factor’s club classics week – 200,000 fewer viewers than it managed last Saturday.
However the gap was far greater when it came to the peak audiences, with Strictly’s audience reaching a massive high of 11.3m – the same peak audience that The X Factor managed at the same stage of the competition in 2011.
By contrast, this Saturday’s X Factor peaked at 9.6m – 1.7m less than Strictly’s top audience.
Strictly’s ratings were comparable to its peak ratings last Saturday, which also topped the 11.3m mark – and gave the show its biggest victory over The X Factor since 2006.
Saturday’s Strictly saw the 13 remaining contestants tackling routines inspired by Hollywood movies – with Denise Van Outen leading the scoreboard for the second week running after she and James Jordan performed a Toy Story-themed foxtrot.
Highlights of Saturday night’s X Factor included Jahmene Douglas’ note-perfect rendition of I Say A Little Prayer For You and James Arthur delivering an acoustic take on LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It.
Sunday night’s live X Factor results show has been faring better than Strictly’s pre-recorded show which is screened on Sunday evenings, with 9.4m – including those watching on the catch-up service ITV+1 – tuning in last weekend to see Melanie Masson sent home. By contrast 8.1m watched Johnny Ball become the first celebrity to exit Strictly,
However both shows were outstripped by Downton Abbey, with an average audience of 9.6m across all services tuning in as Lady Sybil suffered a shocking and unexpected death following the birth of her daughter.
