Who Wants to be a Millionaire presenter Chris Tarrant has been arrested after an incident in a Nottingham curry house on Sunday night.

It’s alleged that what started as light-hearted banter between Tarrant and a couple dining at the restaurant later got a little out of hand.

But the TV star told Sky News this afternoon: “It is just utter nonsense. There was no aggro, there was no temper, there was no problem.”

But he admitted he had asked the man to leave him alone to talk with his colleagues before ‘lobbing’ the cutlery onto his table.

“I don’t know what it was, whether it was a spoon, fork, napkin or whatever,” he added.

Asked if he should have risen above any banter, he replied: “Yes, I should have done. It was just a bit of horseplay.

“There was no menace involved at all. [It was] probably a mucking about with a friend sort of thing.

“It happens a lot. I am a big amiable guy and that sort of thing happens.”

A spokesman for Tarrant said the man claimed he was cut on the arm by a piece of cutlery. He said the presenter denied any involvement in an assault and added that the first the TV personality knew of the claim was when four police officers arrived at his hotel and arrested him. He was bailed to reappear at the station in June.

It’s the latest in a string of headlines the 60-year-old has attracted since the collapse of his marriage to Ingrid Tarrant last year.
