The Best Animated Film of 2011 | The Shortlist – No 2: Puss in Boots

Puss in Boots - Antonio Banderas voices the legendary feline hero

We want you to tell us which was 2011′s best animated film – and help decide the winner of the Animation category in this year’s Richard Attenborough Film Awards. You can cast your vote on the Animated Film of the Year website but to help you make up your mind we’re posting brief reviews of the 10 nominated films over the next 10 days. Today it’s the turn of Puss in Boots.

A spin-off from the popular – and long-running — Shrek franchise, this time around it’s Antonio Banderas’s vainglorious swashbuckler and his high-heeled boots that get to take centre stage. To fill in the hole left by the absence of Mike Myers not-so-jolly green ogre we have Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris as a villainous Jack and Jill in a nursery rhyme mash-up involving magic beans, castles in the sky and a goose laying golden eggs. But really the plot’s beside the point because it’s Banderas’s cat and the other class comedy acts – provided by Salma Hayek’s cat burgling Kitty Softpaws and Zach Galifianakis’s very grumpy Humpty Dumpty — that supply all the purr-fect fun.
