The Best Animated Film of 2011 | The Shortlist – No 5: Kung Fu Panda 2

We want you to tell us which was 2011′s best animated film – and help decide the winner of the Animation category in this year’s Richard Attenborough Film Awards. You can cast your vote on the Animated Film of the Year website but to help you make up your mind we’re posting brief reviews of the 10 nominated films over the next 10 days. Today it’s the turn of Kung Fu Panda 2.

The first of three cartoon sequels in our list, Kung Fu Panda 2 has Jack Black’s roly-poly hero back in action for another knockout combo of vibrant animation, high-kicking action and nifty sight gags. Once again there’s something inherently funny about the notion of tubby panda Po serving up awesome martial arts moves and slacker specialist Black remains the perfect fit for the role. Gary Oldman adds silky menace as the voice of Po’s power-mad peacock adversary Lord Shen, Dustin Hoffman again makes his mark as Po’s tiny Yoda-like mentor Master Shifu and it’s a neat in-joke to cast Crouching Dragon, Hidden Tiger star Michelle Yeoh as a soothsaying goat!

“Jack Black’s cuddly panda hero ruffles Gary Oldman’s peacock feathers” – read the full review.
