Despicable Me 2We want you to tell us which was 2013′s best animated film – and help decide the winner of the Animation category in this year’s Richard Attenborough Film Awards. You can cast your vote on the Movie Preview Network website but to help you make up your mind we’re posting brief reviews of the 10 nominated films over the next 10 days. Next up is Despicable Me 2.

Steve Carell’s criminal mastermind turned doting foster dad Gru is back in this lively sequel to 2010’s charmingly offbeat box-office hit. Gru’s put aside super-villainy in favour of raising his three adorable adoptive daughters, but then a secret crime-fighting organisation recruits him to track down the dastardly crook who has made off with a lethal serum… An unexpected love interest in the form of gauche secret agent Lucy Wilde, voiced by Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig, and Steve Coogan, Russell Brand and Benjamin Bratt also popping up among the voice cast add to the fun this time around. But it’s still Gru’s  zany goggle-wearing yellow-hued Minions who provide most of the chuckles.

Here’s the shortlist, with our potted intros to jog your memory.
