The Best Animated Film of 2013 | Shortlist No 9 – The Smurfs 2

Smurfs 2We want you to tell us which was 2013′s best animated film – and help decide the winner of the Animation category in this year’s Richard Attenborough Film Awards. You can cast your vote on the Movie Preview Network website but to help you make up your mind we’re posting brief reviews of the 10 nominated films. Next up is The Smurfs 2.

Having taken a bite out of the Big Apple in their hugely popular 2011 live-action/animated film, the perky little creatures do the same for Paris in this Gallic-themed sequel. Hank Azaria again hams it up as evil wizard Gargamel, and good couple Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays also return as the Smurfs’ human protectors. The plot, about stealing the formula for Smurf essence, is really just an excuse for lots more child-friendly slapstick, but seeing Brendan Gleeson (as Harris’s stepdad) turned into a duck will divert young viewers, while grown-ups can admire such familiar Parisian landmarks as Notre Dame, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.

Here’s the shortlist, with our potted intros to jog your memory.
