Susan Sarandon is on great form in The Calling as a boozy, pill-popping Canadian cop on the trail of a serial killer, but despite her fine performance this underpowered thriller doesn’t get the heart racing. Echoes of earlier crime classics don’t help. The wintry rural setting and dogged heroine recall Fargo, while the grisly ritualistic murders she is investigating evoke Se7en. Giving away the killer’s identity early on deflates the tension, and when his twisted religious motive is revealed – after some rather clunky theological exposition from Donald Sutherland’s Catholic priest – the outcome is shrug-worthy rather than shocking.
