Mischa Barton, best known for her role in US TV hit The O.C., has been hospitalised in Los Angeles for an ‘undisclosed’ medical problem.
The 23-year-old is reported to have called police to her Hollywood home on Wednesday night, and was escorted to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre.
Her spokesman Craig Schneider said in a statement, “Mischa has been hospitalised per the recommendation of her doctor and is resting in the hospital.”
He gave no further details as to the nature of the problem – but there is speculation that she has been sectioned and is in a psychiatric ward at the hospital.
The Sun reports that the actress is being held under the Section 5150 law – which lets officials put a person in hospital if they are considered a danger to themselves or others, or suffer from a mental disorder.
Barton, who was born in Hammersmith, West London, began acting as a child and appeared in such movies as The Sixth Sense and Notting Hill – but rose to fame as Marissa Cooper on the teen drama The O.C.
Offscreen, her personal life has been rocky and in November 2007 she was arrested and later pleaded no contest to a drink driving charge.
