Jermain Jackman, the 19-year-old Londoner with the soulful, silky smooth voice was just too good for the other finalists and walked away the winner on The Voice for Team Will.
“You have a lot of work to do now,” will.i.am told him, his voice choked with emotion. “You’re going to need a lot of hard work and discipline. This victory is more than just your singing. It’s direction and guidance for the rest of your life.”
“Will has been the best coach ever, the best,” said a tearful Jermain. “This isn’t just an achievement for me. This is for everyone around the world, around the UK, who’s had a dream and worked hard for that dream. Work hard for your dream and you will achieve it.”
Jermain, Christina Marie on Team Ricky and Sally Barker on Team Tom were the last three singers left standing in the final after Jamie Johnson on Team Kylie had exited earlier in the night.
It was a close-fought contest, but Jermain emerged victorious.
“There’s not many singers that have Jermain’s range,” said Will.
And some might have said Jermain needed all his skills to tackle his first song – Wrecking Ball, by Miley Cyrus. The song choice surprised some. But Jermain was quietly confident.
“I’m focused for the final and on delivering the best performance I can,” he said before the show. “Whatever happens is meant to be.”
And what happened was the public loved him.
Jermain’s duet with Will was Pure Imagination, from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
“I picked that song because it’s like Jermain,” said Will. “He’s going to dream his way to success. He is on a mission.”
Jermain’s next mission was to sing his favourite song from the whole competition, I’m Telling You, by Jennifer Hudson.
That was the song Jermain sang in his blind audition and it was that performance that got Will’s attention.
“I told Jermain to audition for the show,” Will said, referring to when he met Jermain at a music festival, “and I was the only coach who turned for him. It was fate.”
Oh, and in case you’re wondering… Jermain does still plan to become Britain’s first singing prime minister.
