The Voice favourite Ruth Brown has had another triumphant week as Will.i.am and Tom Jones’ teams took to the live stage for the second time.
Having wowed the judges with her first live performance a fortnight ago the 20-year-old left them speechless this time around with her rendition of Emeli Sande’s Next To Me – and once again provoked an emotional reaction in her coach Tom Jones.
“When I hear Ruth sing I get choked up,” he said, “I’ve done duets with lots of people but this girl has something I’ve never heard before.
But she wasn’t the only contestant impressing the judges as the remaining acts bid for a place in the semi-finals.
Fellow Tom Jones team member Leanne Mitchell also turned in a stellar performance, wowing the panel with her rendition of I Put A Spell On Your.
Danny O’Donoghue commented, “I knew you had some confidence issues but they’re all gone now. What a great start to the show.”
And other favourites including Jaz Ellington and Joelle Moses also made an impact, Jaz with his mash-up of Bruno Mars’ Just The Way You Are and Billy Joel’s Just The Way You Are, and Joelle performing the Kelly Clarkson hit Stronger.
“That was fantastic,” Danny told Jaz. “I shut my eyes and I just sat back because honestly, you’re special.” Meanwhile Jessie J told Joelle that she was “vocally great” but added, “the performance I want to see you let go more.”
The show also featured four other acts – Matt and Sueleen and Adam Isaacs on Team Tom Jones, and Will.i.am’s remaining team members Frances Wood and Tyler James.
Matt and Sueleen and Adam both divided the judges, with Jessie J saying the former’s performance “did not show off their full potential”, while she told Adam, “I think you could have given more.”
However they loved Tyler James’ rendition of Sign Your Name, with Will saying, “Your country should be honoured to have a smooth soulful singer like you,” while Frances Wood’s version of Robin S’s Show Me Love also proved popular.”
“I think you did a really good job,” Jessie said, “I think you can take more risks but you made a really good job of making that song sound current.”
Sunday’s show will see two acts from each team eliminated by their respective coaches.
