Matt Cardle has won The X Factor 2010! After months of auditions, bootcamp, tears, tantrums and triumphs, the 27-year-old painter decorator from Essex has been named series champion…..
Matt was one of four acts to make it through to the final, along with Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction and Cher Lloyd – although the show was filled with familiar faces from the series
Don’t worry, Wagner hasn’t returned to the competition – but he appeared at the start with all the 16 finalists singing their own rendition of 80s hit Flashdance
Matt Cardle kicked off the show singing Dido’s Here With Me, backed by an ethereal-looking orchestra
Rebecca Ferguson put up a good show singing Corinne Bailey Rae’s Like A Star – and once again won raves from the judges
One Direction won raves from the judges for their rendition of the Elton John classic Your Song
Finally Cher Lloyd took to the stage in the first half of the show to perform a mash-up of 80s hit The Clapping Song with Missy Elliott’s Get Ur Freak On
Then it was time for the duets – and first up was Matt, who performed Rihanna’s hit Unfaithful with the lady herself
Rebecca duetted with Christina Aguilera, singing her hit Beautiful – but was so overwhelmed by the superstar singer’s presence that at one point she forgot her words
One Direction, meanwhile, had the chance to perform She’s The One with Robbie Williams – who had hot-footed it from performing with Take That on the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final!
And finally Cher’s dream came true when she got to share the stage with Will I Am, singing Black Eyed Peas hit I Gotta Feelin’
A shocked Rebecca was the first to learn that she had made it through to Sunday’s all-important results show
With One Direction also going through to Sunday, that just left Matt and Cher – and the final place went to a delighted Matt….
…which meant that Cher Lloyd was the act who was sent home on Saturday night
However the teenager maintained her dignity at news of her departure, saying that duetting with Will I Am was the highlight of her X Factor experience
Sunday’s show saw Matt Cardle sing the Katy Perry song Firework – and although Simon praised the performance he wasn’t too keen on his bright yellow trousers!
The judges loved One Direction’s version of Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn, which they hoped would keep them in contention
Rebecca won more plaudits from the panel with a rousing rendition of the Eurythmics’ 80s classic Sweet Dreams
A thrilled Matt was the first person to learn he had made it through to the top two
Rebecca, meanwhile, was stunned to learn she had also made it through to the final two
Remember Ablisa, the duo who ended up in a fight on stage? They were back, along with other memorably bad auditionees, singing a medley of Lady Gaga hits
However One Direction learned that they had finished third in the competition. Simon said he was “gutted” for the boys, but they assured their fans it would not spell the end of the group
The two remaining acts then performed what would be their debut singles if they won – and for the first time in show history they were different songs. Matt went first with Biffy Clyro’s Many Of Horror, retitled When We Collide….
Rebecca’s would-be debut single, meanwhile, was a cover version of Duffy’s Distant Dreamer – but would her performance be enough to turn her dream into a reality?
And then it was the moment everybody had been waiting for – who would be crowned the 2010 winner? Would it be Matt…..
It’s Matt! And he couldn’t quite believe it himself, being rendered speechless afterwards
A thrilled Dannii was the first to congratulate Matt on his victory. It is the second time that she has won a series
Rebecca also offered her congratulations to a shocked Matt as his victory began to sink in
And she took defeat graciously, saying that the experience had been “amazing”. We think we’ll be hearing from her in the future!
He reprised his winning song again but the performance fell apart towards the end when all the finalists appeared on stage to congratulate him. He’s in there somewhere, we think…..
Matt now wins a £1m recording contract and could well have this year’s Christmas number one. And with that, it’s all over for another year – we’ll do it all over again in 2011……
