Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh shook hands and made up their differences as the second live show of The X Factor 2012 got underway.

The show kicked off with backstage footage of the aftermath of last Sunday’s dramatic results show, as Gary stormed off and branded the result “ridiculous” as his act Carolynne Poole was sent home instead of Rylan Clark.

But despite speculation that the pair were set to continue their feud, Gary appeared to have calmed down. “Today is a new day,” he said, “Louis, shake hands.”

Meanwhile Louis confessed that it had been fear which led him to send the vote to deadlock – which resulted in Rylan being saved and Carolynne leaving.

“Carolynne was the better singer, Rylan’s a great entertainer, I literally couldn’t make up my mind,” he said, adding, “I was scared.”

The dramatic events of last Sunday also led to allegations that the result had been ‘fixed’, after the show’s executive producer Richard Holloway was reportedly seen talking to Louis during the sing-off.

However this was later denied, with producers saying that Holloway regularly consults with the judges during the show.
