The BBC is fighting to stop The One Show presenter Christine Bleakley from defecting to ITV to co-present This Morning, according to reports.

The Mirror says that the network has lined-up a six figure deal to try and tempt Christine over, following reports in The Sun last weekend that she was interested in replacing the departing Fern Britton on the show.

However the paper reports that the deal has been in place for some time – with ITV pursuing the presenter just days after Fern announced she would be quitting the show in July.

Belfast-born Christine has been a big hit on The One Show with co-host Adrian Chiles and also won fans after appearing on 2008’s Strictly Come Dancing, where she finished in fifth place.

“She can think on her feet and works well with Chiles, even though he’s a bit of a handful and she admitted to not liking him at first,” an insider told the paper.

“She’s a great foil for an older male co-host because she’s pretty but smart, too.

“Christine also has warmth which makes other women like her – which is very important for a show like This Morning.”

However the insider added that the BBC may well be reluctant to let Christine go.

“Their argument is why would she go and do a daytime show when she is already on primetime BBC1?”

Others said to be in the running for the job are GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips, talk show host Melanie Sykes and musician turned TV presenter Myleene Klass.
