TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Friday 13th April

MasterChef: The Final, 8.30pm, BBC1

After seven gruelling weeks hunched over hobs, and rustling up amazing creations including swans made of coconut and crazy concoctions of beetroot sorbet and smoked chicken, hearty pies to please the critics and oozy puddings to make Gregg weep tears of joy, the 56 amateur cooks have been whittled down to three. In tonight’s final, the contestants must produce the three best dishes of their lives as they push their skills and creativity to the max. Only one will be crowned MasterChef champ and follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner, Dr Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed. Who will wow judges John and Gregg the most and walk away with the coveted title? Episodes, 10pm (times vary), BBC2

Hapless Matt is in serious trouble with his fiery ex-wife, Diane, after it comes out his young sons have watched their dad’s shameful ‘Box’ antics online. Matt is summoned to the family home to have a father-son chat, but Diane is left shaking her head in disbelief when Matt’s apology falls seriously short. Meanwhile, Sean and Beverly tell irritating producer Tim to stick his job – hurray! – and a stoned Carol ends up back in bed with her smarmy ex, Merc Lapidus. Rating: *****

Jane McDonald: My Life Story, 9pm, C5

My Life Story follows the singer’s rise to fame and early years. Jane’s first word was Downtown, the title of Petula Clark’s 1964 hit. As a teen she toured UK pubs and clubs with her dad (and roadie), Peter. But his sudden death in 1993 stopped her in her tracks: ‘I ran away to sea,’ Jane says of her time on the cruise ships.
