TV Times top picks for today

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Friday 2nd March

Cruising with Jane McDonald, 9.00pm, C5

For the last episode of the series our irrepressible guide goes back to an era in which she feels very comfortable! Jane is cruising the Mississippi on the world’s largest steamboat, American Queen, which drips with antiques and old-style glamour. Jane even has her own personal butler! But this cruise isn’t all about luxury. Jane takes a trip to Oak Alley Plantation and while imagining herself as an extra in Gone with the Wind, she also learns about its dark past when plantations owed their huge wealth to slave labour. She also visits the Louisiana State Penitentiary, and finally ends her adventure with a trip to Graceland, the home of, and now shrine to, Elvis Presley – uh huh huh! Rating: ****

Requiem, 9.00pm, BBC1

With all the weirdness and misery in Penllynith, it’s no wonder everybody is at breaking point. While Aron takes his anger out on lovely Hal, Nick is desperate to leave town and Matilda is growing increasingly disturbed and visits psychiatrist Verity (Pippa Haywood) for help. Matilda gets a fresh lead, however, when she encounters troubled local Laura (Anastasia Hille), who claims that a strange voice gave her information about Carys. Rating: ****

Jo Brand: Secrets of Her Success, 10.30pm, C5

Jo Brand’s bold and self-deprecating sense of humour comes under the spotlight in this documentary. It goes right back to the 1980s, when she started out on the circuit as “The Sea Monster”. Jo went on to win Stand Up of the Year in 1995, then write and star in sitcoms Getting On, for which she won a BAFTA, and Damned. Is there no end to her talents? Rating: ****
