TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Saturday 11th August

My Family and the Galapagos, 8pm, C4

The star of tonight’s episode has to be five-year-old Isla. From paddling with marine iguanas to swimming with sharks, the little girl with her fearless enthusiasm has truly had a summer like no other. But before the Halls family head back to the UK, Monty has a life-long ambition to fulfil – looking for sharks on the islands of Darwin and Wolf. At the northern tip of the Galapagos, they are a haven for 33 species, including the one Monty is desperate to see – the whale shark. But even here the species is under threat; it’s estimated the number of hammerheads has dropped 95 per cent in the last 30 years. It couldn’t be more important that this and the next generation do everything we can to protect them now. Rating: ****

The People’s Vet, 4.35pm, C4

Not everyone loves a pug, but one look into the sad liquid eyes of King George, a pug pup, and you’ll be rooting for him as Kirkdale head vet Stephen tries to save his leg. With infected skin and bald patches, Bobo the cat isn’t quite so easy to fall for, but vet Beth is doing her best for her anyway. But are Bobo’s owners taking her advice? As for Barney the budgie, this local radio star’s feathers are preventing him from flying. No, really! Rating: ****

Cardinal: Blackfly Season, from 9pm, BBC4

A murder, an attempted murder and a disappearance – as weary detective John Cardinal points out, this case is getting more complicated by the minute. In tonight’s double bill of the absorbing Canadian crime drama, Cardinal and partner Delorme make some headway in their efforts to identify mystery woman ‘Red’, but is she hiding something from them? And what is Red’s connection to the horrifying crime scene found in the cave? Meanwhile, the sinister Ray continues his gruesome quest for domination, and foolish young Kevin realises that he’s in way over his head – to put it mildly. With only two episodes to go after tonight’s double bill, there’s a showdown coming – and not everyone will survive. Rating: ****
