TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Sunday 27th May

A Very English Scandal, 9pm, BBC1

Hiring a hitman can be a tricky business, but in 1975, the dodgy associates of Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe thought they’d found just the right one to bump off his troublesome ex-lover Norman Scott. It proved unwise, however, to hire former pilot Andrew Newton, who turned out to be a drunk and a fantasist. It’s quite apt that it’s an Inbetweeners star, Blake Harrison, playing the hapless Newton – the mission is a total comedy of errors! Michele Dotrice joins the cast as Norman’s landlady, the wonderfully named Edna Friendship (whose evidence helped police nail Newton) in an action-packed episode that may well leave you bewildered when you consider this plan was hatched by seemingly intelligent men! Countryfile Royal Special, 6.30pm, BBC1

Countryfile Royal Special

To mark Countryfile turning 30 – and the 65th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation – the team have been given unprecedented access to three royal country estates: Windsor, Balmoral and Sandringham. They begin at Windsor Castle, a 5,000-acre estate which has become an oasis where the Queen can embrace her love of farming and the countryside. Matt Baker, Anita Rani, John Craven and Adam Henson all look at different aspects of rural life at Windsor, from the rare breeds of cattle and horses the Queen has saved to the conservation of the forests and modern innovations in sustainable energy. Monaco Grand Prix, from 12.30pm, Sky Sports F1/C4

It’s early days, but there’s starting to be some daylight between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, with the Brit topping the Driver Standings with 95 points, 17 ahead of the German. So here in Monaco,in probably the most prestigious race of the season (start 2.10pm), Vettel needs to put the pressure on. He won here last year, while Hamilton was seventh and Vettel had a 25-point championship lead. Can he catch Hamilton this time around? Rating: *****
