The Foreign Doctors Are Coming, 10pm, C4

With the NHS battling against a shortage of doctors, this film follows some of the foreign doctors as they try to pass an exam to allow them to work in the UK. The GMC (General Medical Council) in Manchester is responsible for making sure all doctors practising in the UK know their stuff. To prepare for the GMC test, as many as 70 doctors every two weeks attend Dr Swamy’s training academy to make sure they know how the NHS works. The main emphasis seems to be on teaching how to communicate with UK patients, using empathy, sympathy and honesty. For many doctors, it’s also a bit of a culture shock, from ethical and cultural issues right down to the Manchester weather. Rating: ***
