TV tonight 5 Gold Rings

Phillip with Simon and Brenda, and Frank and Matthew

Phillip Schofield is back for a new series of the game where players must work out an answer… then put a ring on it! The new series kicks off with a TV soap battle as Coronation Street’s Simon Gregson takes on Emmerdale’s Matthew Wolfenden, each playing with a member of the public in pursuit of the £50,000 jackpot. Teaming up with Simon is Brenda from Yorkshire, who’s got her eye on a new kitchen. Meanwhile, Matthew’s joined by Londoner Frank, who’d love to take his girlfriend on a special holiday… Which of our celebrities will strike Gold?

Is barrister Rochelle (far right) onto Peter?

As skeletons spill out of the cupboard, embattled MP Peter Laurence finally sees his chance to land the top job in tonight’s penultimate episode. Some powerful people believe the current Prime Minister has run her course, but with high-flying barrister Rochelle Madeley (Harlots star Pippa Bennett-Warner) beginning to act upon suspicions that her client lied in his libel case, can he still forge a path to No 10? Whether a top barrister would risk her career on a matter of conscience is questionable, but it does set the scene for an intriguing finale next time out.

Countryfile Ramble for BBC Children in Need, 6pm, BBC1

TV tonight Countryfile Ramble for Children in Need

Adam and Rayane with their dogs Peg and Diesel

The much-loved ramble returns, but it’s a more scaled-down event as the team ensures their walks are COVID-safe. Presenters including Matt Baker, Anita Rani and Adam Henson will take part in a socially distanced one-to-one ramble with an inspirational youngster who has had support through a Children in Need-funded project. Matt is joined in the Peak District by Harvey, 16, while Adam walks the Cotswolds with Rayane, 11, and his support dog Diesel. The sort of uplifting TV we need right now!

TV tonight Deadwater Fell

David Tennant stars as a suspected killer

Best film to watch on TV tonight

Nanny McPhee, 2pm, ITV

TV tonight Nanny McPhee

Dame Emma Thompson is Nanny McPhee

In adapting Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda series of children’s books for the screen, Dame Emma Thompson awarded herself the title role as the anti-Mary Poppins, a gorgon-like nanny despatched to sort out ill-behaved children. Which would be the noxious brood of widower Colin Firth, whose initial prank is to feign being cannibals. Old-fashioned in the best sense of the term, this lively comic fantasy taps into the same ghoulishly funny sense of anarchy as the works of Roald Dahl.
