Unfriended | Film review – A scary supernatural chiller for the social media age

A scary supernatural horror thriller for the social media age, low-budget chiller Unfriended finds six teenage friends haunted by the spirit of a dead high-school girl, driven to suicide by cyber-bullying trolls after an embarrassing video went viral. The action unfolds entirely on the laptop screen of one of the friends, Shelley Hennig’s Blaire, and the conceit proves surprisingly inventive and gripping rather than just a gimmick. The device certainly works much more successfully here than in the contrived 2014 Elijah Wood cyber-thriller Open Windows.

Unfriended is showing on Sky Movies Premiere tonight at 12.05am and is available on DVD from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
