Up in the Air – Couch Potato was not impressed

What’s the best view you’ve ever seen from a plane?

Take a look at this trailer – seen any of these ?

I’m rather sad to say that pondering on this question, was, for me, the best thing about this movie.

I didn’t hate it, but I became restless, and I won’t be watching it again.

George Clooney jetting round the USA firing people on behalf of corporate fat-cats too cowardly to do it themselves – it’s a fresh and intriguing angle. But, he’s a man whose greatest dream is clocking enough air miles to earn himself an exclusive executive loyalty card. What’s interesting about such a shallow chap? Why should I care about him?

Up in the Air, George Clooney

The movie includes numerous clips featuring people losing their jobs. I cared about these people, and it annoyed me that the film wasn’t about them.

So, why on earth has Up in the Air been rated so highly by critics and awards bodies? Am I missing something?

Is it because it’s in tune with the current times, what with the firing and the recession and all of that…?

Or is it because of the film’s clever wordy script? I’m sure it’s full of more genius lines than I remember, but you know what, the problem for me was that I just didn’t care about Clooney’s character, and when you stop caring you stop listening to what they’re saying.

Maybe my expectations were too high. I was going on the brilliant website, the numerous fabulous trailers, the positive critical response, the great word of mouth (including words of praise here on Movie Talk), the awards… it was a lot to live up to.

I did love the aerial photography, but found this film otherwise disappointing, especially as I chose it as the movie to initiate my new sofa into Couch Potatodom. Sorry, Sofa, it will get better, I promise.
