Looking to repeat the Mamma Mia! jukebox-musical formula of sun, sea, sex and a slew of memorable tunes, Walking on Sunshine raids the 1980s pop charts for its songs. Stand by for hits by the likes of Madonna, Wham, Duran Duran and The Human League, belted out with teeth-rattling gusto by the cast.
Hannah Arterton, sister of Gemma, plays the story’s romantic lead, Taylor, who turns up in Puglia for the wedding of big sister Maddie (Annabel Scholey) and discovers that the groom is none other than her old holiday fling Raf (Giulio Berruti). Should she keep shtum and let the love of her life slip away?
At every turn in the plot, a familiar song points the way – ‘Don’t You Want Me Baby’, ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, ‘Eternal Flame’, you can probably guess the rest. Pop star Leona Lewis and comedian Katy Brand are on hand as friends of the bride, and Grey Wise plays her slimy goateed ex (his distracting facial hair giving him the appearance of someone wearing a merkin on his chin). The story and acting are about as subtle as a kiss me quick hat, but those in the right mood will find it irresistibly cheesy fun.
Certificate 12A. Runtime 97 mins. Directors Max Giwa, Dania Pasquini.
