War and Peace lost a million viewers from its premiere on January 3rd, while The Voice UK returned with 7.1 million viewers on Saturday, almost a million fewer than 2015’s premiere of eight million.
War and Peace is thought to be the BBC’s most expensive drama ever, but the adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel drew a smaller audience than Countryfile (7.4 million) and Still Open All Hours (7 million), according to unofficial overnight figures.
ITV’s detective drama Endeavour, in the same 9pm time slot as War and Peace, increased its audience from 4.8 million last week to 5.1 million.
On Saturday, the return of The Voice UK with new judges Paloma Faith and Boy George drew a 32 per cent share of the total watching audience, but was down on last year’s premiere by almost a million and 1.5 million down on the 2014 series, which featured Kylie Minogue.
These figures don’t take into account those who’ve watched the programmes on catch-up services.
