Sherlock star Martin Freeman will be returning as plucky treasure-hunting hobbit Bilbo Baggins in The Desolation of Smaug – the second part of Peter Jackson’s latest Middle-Earth saga – this December.
To help fans prepare for a return to the world of Tolkien, Jackson has been busy putting together an Extended Edition of the first movie with 13 minutes of extra footage.
Released on DVD and Blu-ray later this year, it will contain a handful of never-before-seen scenes which didn’t make the final cut and you can have a sneak peek at one of them below.
Besides the extra footage, the mammoth Hobbit special edition features nine hours of bonus features, including commentary with Jackson, and The Appendices – a multi-part documentary focusing on various aspects of the film and the Trilogy.
The special edition is released in the UK on digital download on 22 October, and on Blu-ray and DVD on 4 November. Handily, this sets up second instalment ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’, which is out in cinemas on 13 December.
