TV Times top picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Tuesday 11th September

Great British Bake Off, 8pm, C4

The bakers take on three fiendish challenges in GBBO Bread Week! Paul’s in his element, prowling the tent, watching them make Chelsea buns. Then it’s a technical with one of the shortest time limits ever seen on the show, followed by a marathon showstopper. The bakers have a whopping five hours to make a ‘korovai’, a tiered sweet bread. The results are spectacular, but who’ll ‘knead’ a shoulder to cry on when they’re sent home? Rating: *****

Wanderlust, 9pm, BBC1

After the bombshell of the opening episode, Joy (Toni Collette) and Alan (Steven Mackintosh) are set to take their marriage down an unconventional path, and the ripples of that decision begin to spread tonight. However, the couple are soon distracted by the arrival of their eldest daughter Laura (Celeste Dring, The Windsors, This Country), who’s drunk and upset after hearing that her ex has announced his engagement to someone else. The creator of this irreverent series, Nick Payne, has a real knack for drawing authentic characters and Laura looks set to be a fine addition. What’s more, her memorable entrance sets off a chain of events that could blow this slow-burning drama wide open! Rating: *****

Princess Margaret: The Rebel Royal 9pm, BBC2

Without a proper role, the Queen’s younger sister Margaret caused quite a bit of scandal – particularly in her choice of lovers, as is revealed in the first of this excellent two-part series. From the age of 16, Margaret had had an affair with dashing former World War Two pilot Peter Townsend who was not only married with children but her father’s equerry. When the affair hit the headlines in 1953, divorced Townsend was sent off to Brussels for two years and the Queen ordered Margaret to wait for him. However, Margaret chose not to marry him, and later wed bohemian photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, who was bisexual and notoriously promiscuous. Rating: *****
