TV Times tops picks for tonight

What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight three of the best shows on telly tonight for Thursday 16th November

Love, Lies & Records, 9.00pm, BBC1

Writer Kay Mellor (The Syndicate, In the Club) has established herself as the queen of primetime drama thanks to rounded characters and superb scripts peppered with Northern realism and humour. Kay’s latest offering, headlined by Ashley Jensen, is no exception. It follows Ashley’s maverick registrar Kate Dickenson, as she juggles her personal life with the daily dramas of births, deaths and marriages. Things get more complicated when an upset colleague threatens to expose a risqué secret from her past but first Kate has to deal with a last-minute wedding at a hospice (have the tissues handy – we cried!) and a potential sham marriage… Rating: *****

Serial Killer with Piers Morgan, 9.00pm, ITV

Serial Killer with Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan sits across from convicted murderer Mark Riebe (pictured with Piers) and can barely disguise his contempt. After a long interview, the Good Morning Britain host has failed to drag the truth from a man who’s thought to be among America’s worst serial killers, yet the detective who caught him isn’t surprised. Riebe is serving a life sentence for killing Donna Callahan in 1989, but almost certainly murdered many more women, and the twisted fantasist has tormented the families of his victims for decades by refusing to come clean. As a piece of TV, this is a chilling glimpse of a wicked and deluded man, with the only satisfaction coming in the final moments when Piers tells him as much. Rating: ***
