Winter

An acutely gripping, grimly authentic thriller set in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, Winter’s Bone was one of last year’s very best US films and has picked up four well-deserved Oscar nominations – for best film, best actress, best adapted screenplay and best supporting actor.

The film’s standout performance comes from Jennifer Lawrence in the role of the story’s surprisingly resilient heroine, Ree Dolly, a 17-year-old girl who must find her missing drug-dealer father within a week or see her family evicted from their backwoods home. Carrying out her dogged searches among a close-lipped community ravaged by crystal-meth addiction, she encounters obstruction and malice at every turn.

Lawrence will probably miss out on the best actress Oscar to Black Swan’s Natalie Portman – but she’s clearly a star in the making.

Released by Artificial Eye on DVD & Blu-ray on 31 January.
