Craig Colton has become the latest casualty of The The X Factor, following a tense sing-off which saw the vote taken to deadlock for the first time this series.

The 22-year-old faced his first sing-off on Sunday after finding himself in the bottom two with Amelia Lily, following Saturday night’s movie-themed show.

But after he delivered an emotional rendition of Will You Still Love Me tomorrow and Amelia had sung Lady Gaga’s You And I, the judges were divided on who to send home.

Gary, Craig’s mentor, voted to save him – and won himself boos from the crowd after accusing Amelia of “shouting” through her song – while Amelia’s mentor Kelly voted to send Craig home.

“You did not shout your way through the song,” she told Amelia, “all you had to do was sing it which was exactly what you did tonight.”

That left Tulisa and Louis with the casting votes – and while Tulisa chose to save Craig, Louis opted for Amelia.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been so torn before in a sing-off,” Tulisa said, “I have to base it on tonight’s performance, and the act I’m sending home is Amelia.”

Louis added, “Craig, I love your voice – but Amelia, you are a ready made pop star. The act I’m sending home is Craig.”

All of which meant that the result reverted back to deadlock, and was decided by public vote – with Craig’s X Factor dream ended when he was revealed to have received the lowest number of votes from viewers.

Afterwards Craig – who had been the bookies’ favourite to leave – said, “I’ve had the time of my life in the last few months, I’ve done myself proud.”

Gary, meanwhile, added, “Everybody in here tonight heard the might of your voice Craig. Please do stay in touch, if you ever need anything just ask.”

Craig’s departure leaves Gary with just one act – Marcus Collins – remaining in the competition.

Tulisa also only has one act remaining, girl group Little Mix, while Kelly still has her three girls – Amelia, Janet Devlin and Misha B, the latter two both making it through to next weekend on the public vote.
