Girlband have become the second casualty of The X Factor – leaving their mentor Louis Walsh with just one act in the competition.

The four-piece narrowly escaped elimination last week when fellow girl group Bad Lashes got the boot – but this week they found themselves in the bottom two once again, along with Spanish singer Ruth Lorenzo.

Both acts performed a song they had chosen themselves in a bid to stay in the competition, with Girlband opting for Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want To Change A Thing, while Ruth chose the Prince classic Purple Rain.

And for the second time this series, the judges’ votes on which act to send home ended in a tie. After Louis and Dannii, Ruth’s mentor, both opted to save their own acts, Cheryl chose to save Ruth.

“This is horrendous,” she said. I thought they both sounded the best they’ve sounded throughout the competition but based on the last performance I thought Ruth absolutely nailed it.”

Simon, however, was undecided.

“I’m glad that we do this thing because it makes it easier for me to make my mind up,” he said. “Ruth, once again you didn’t play to your strengths. Girls, I think you’ve been given a really bad job by your mentor.”

He subsequently opted to send Ruth packing, sending the result to deadlock – and as with last week’s show it was down to the public vote to decide which act would be sent home.

Girlband were subsequently revealed as the act who had received the lowest number of votes, bringing their time on The X Factor to an end.

“They did their best,” Louis said, “and I’m absolutely glad I picked them. If I was doing it all over again I’d pick these girls.”
