X Factor: Melanie and Jade through to bootcamp

Melanie McCabe and Jade Richards’ dream of X Factor success came a step closer on Sunday night’s show as they both made it through to the boot camp stage.

Both girls have come close to the finals in the past, with Saturday’s show seeing Jade audition for the third time and Melanie deliver her fourth audition.

And Melanie won some of the best reviews of the night from the judges, following her heartfelt rendition of David Guetta’s Titanium in front of the Wembley crowd.

“You completely knocked it out of the park, I think there is another level with you,” Gary Barlow told her.

Meanwhile an emotional Louis Walsh added: “I think you’re a star and it’s not because you’re from Dublin.”

Jade’s passage to boot camp was less smooth, with the judges expressing concerns over her performance of Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black.

“There is no passion and no fire inside you,” Sharon Osbourne complained, while Louis asked: “I know you’ve got a good voice but are you going to work for it? Are you going to give us 100 per cent?”

In spite of their reservations, however, all four voted her through to the next round.

Others who made their mark on Sunday night’s show included van driver Shelley Smith, male singers Tom Mann and Luke Friend and housekeeper Relley Clarke – although the latter almost missed out after delivering a disappointing performance.

“I can still see a really good singer under there,” Gary said as they voted her through to the next round – but afterwards Nicole Scherzinger admitted she was “lucky we held on to what we saw in the room because that did not translate.”

Meanwhile country singer Abi Alton – who divided the panel on Saturday night with her original audition – won four very enthusiastic yeses from the judges as she returned with her self-penned track Jigsaw.

“I just think that you are so courageous for writing this new song and sharing it with us,” Nicole Scherzinger said.

Sharon added: “It’s answered the question of whether you will translate to an arena, you got a standing ovation.”

The X Factor continues next Saturday night at 8pm.
