Matt Cardle may be bookies’ favourite to win this year’s X Factor – but he’s hoping his fate won’t turn out like last year’s Danyl Johnson.

Danyl wowed the judges with his first audition in last year’s competition, making him the early favourite to win the show – but he ended up finishing fourth behind finalists Stacey Solomon and Olly Murs and eventual winner Joe McElderry.

Matt said he was trying not to pay too much attention to the odds.

“I’m not taking that too seriously at the moment. It’s so early on in the competition for that kind of thing I think, and it didn’t work out for Danyl last year and he was the favourite around this time, so I’m not taking that to heart,” the 27-year-old said.

But the decorator said he was flattered all the same.

“It’s nice to hear, obviously, it’s lovely to hear, but I’m just going to keep my head down and do my best, and see what happens. You can only do your best,” he said.
