With just 12 acts remaining in The X Factor 2011, the theme was ‘love and heartbreak’ – with the latter looming for one act as the first public vote of the series loomed
Boyband Nu Vibe kicked off proceedings with their rendition of U2’s With Or Without You
The quintet gave an assured performance, but not everybody was impressed, with Gary Barlow criticising the vocals
Gary was also critical of Sami Brookes’ rendition of I Will Always Love You, calling it ‘a little bit cruise ship’
Craig Colton was up next, singing Beyonce’s Best Thing I Never Had – and although he had admitted being uncertain about the song choice, the judges certainly liked it
The panel were also unanimous in loving Janet Devlin’s version of Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling In Love With You – following a rough week for the Irish teenager in which her grandfather sadly passed away
Frankie Cocozza was saddled with a last-minute song change and ended up performing Coldplay’s The Scientist – a performance which won him mixed reviews from the panel
Meanwhile Johnny Robinson attracted more attention for his wacky geisha get-up than for his rendition of Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
Girl group Rhythmix once again fared well, singing Nelly Furtado’s I’m Like A Bird and getting the judges’ thumbs-up
Meanwhile Marcus Collins appeared nervous while singing Rihanna’s Russian Roulette – and was another contestant receiving a mixed response, but mentor Gary Barlow praised his performance
Misha B’s version of Charles and Eddie’s Would I Lie To You, however, was one of the highlights of the show, and saw the teenage singer perform from behind the judges’ desk at one point
The panel also loved The Risk’s rendition of Bruno Mars’s Just The Way You Are
Sophie Habibis tackled The Calling’s Wherever You Will Be, and won praise for her vocals – could she be the dark horse in the competition?
Kitty Brucknell rounded off Saturday evening’s show singing Bjork’s It’s Oh So Quiet – which placed her in a bizarre Alice In Wonderland style setting
Sunday night’s show saw the judges getting serious as the results of the first public vote were revealed and the first sing-off of the series loomed
The Wanted were the first star guests of the night, performing Kiss Of Life while surrounded by women twirling fire!
Katy Perry – complete with pink hair – delivered a quiet acoustic rendition of her new track Pop Star
Sunday’s show saw the 12 finalists perform a group number together for the first time – with Frankie and Sophie in playful mood
And the first act to go through were – The Risk!
Johnny Robinson couldn’t quite believe it when he learned that he had made it through to next week
There was also good news for Craig Colton as he made it through to next Saturday
Rhythmix were thrilled to have made the cut as was their mentor Tulisa
But Frankie found himself in the bottom two and had to face the sing-off – where he performed Daniel Merriweather’s Red
In the end though it was Nu Vibe who were eliminated after losing out in the judges’ vote – and a tearful Tulisa joined them on stage as they made their exit. And now 11 finalists remain…..
